Kirk, Spock and McCoy are transporting Federation Commissioner Nancy Hedford to the Enterprise via the Galileo, when they are captured by an energy cloud that brings them to Gamma Canaris N. There, they meet Zephram Cochrane, a famous scientist who disappeared over a century earlier. Cochrane, it's revealed, told the energy cloud - an intelligent creature he refers to as "The Companion" - that he was lonely; that he needed companionship. Instead of freeing him, the Companion brought the Galileo there. Ultimately, this turns into a cosmic love story between Cochrane, the Companion and Nancy Hedford and, as such becomes one of Star Trek's most touching episodes.

Finally realizing that the species cannot be forced to worship anything, Apollo moves to a spiritual plane, joining the other gods who had long ago realized that their time had come and gone.

Synopsis:

After several star systems have been destroyed, the Enterprise investigates the situation and discovers what's left of the USS. Constellation, with her commander, Commodore Matt Decker, the only person on board. He relates a terrifying tale, detailing how a virtual tunnel in space emitted energy waves that sliced up whole planets which it devoured. He beamed his crew down to one of the local worlds in the hopes of protecting them, but that particular planet was the next target. Kirk and Spock come to the conclusion that this thing is actually a doomsday machine - an ultimate weapon - created by a long dead race, that has been destroying planets for centuries. Now the hope is that the Enterprise and whatever can be salvaged of the Constellation will be able to defeat it before it continues on its way.

Synopsis:

Over four billion people are obliterated in the Malurian star system, and the perpetrator is a combination probe and computer identifying itself as Nomad, which has more power than the Enterprise or the entire fleet. Nomad is brought aboard the Enterprise. Mistakenly it believes that Captain Kirk is actually its creator, Jackson Roykirk, and for that reason, he obeys Kirk's commands. In a Vulcan mind-meld, Spock learns that the machine was actually an Earth probe lost in space centuries earlier. Captured by a machine planet, it was given intelligence and the ability to purify all things impure. Kirk must trick the machine into destroying itself.

While this is an idyllic world, the people are exactly like children. No cares and concerns, allowing Vaal to take care of them and, in turn, making offerings to "him" in appeasement. Kirk and company must make them see that this is wrong; that they have the right to govern themselves.

Synopsis:

During an ion storm, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura are transported to a parallel dimension on an alternate, savage Enterprise. In this universe, the Federation is as feared as the Klingons and crewmen move up in rank by assassination. Spock (with a beard) is still first officer, but his logic is coupled with a shocking ruthlessness. Kirk and company try to fit in until they figure out a way home, barely avoiding discovery by those around them. Simultaneously, Kirk tries to convince Spock to see the logic in changing the order; that the Federation will ultimately be defeated by rebel forces and he, Spock, can be the man who can lead the revolution. Scotty ultimately devises a plan by which they will attempt to duplicate the conditions present during the ion storm and transport to their own universe, but if they miss the window of opportunity, they will be trapped there forever.

On the planet, they learn Exeter's Captain Tracey has violated the prime directive, meddling in the natives' affairs because he thinks the planet's atmosphere grants immortality. Tracey's power-hungry, and not even Kirk can stand in this madman's way!
